As I write this I find myself 55 years of age so that puts me in a unique group of people who actually watched black and white TV! I remember my childhood years as a boy, toys were simple and the best toys modeled trains, trucks, cars, boats and guns. We didn't have things like Thomas the Train but we did have toy model trains. We even had a Lionel scale model electric train which fascinated me. Something about these toys that attract boys and men like magnets, could it be an overwhelming desire to control these big monsters? If those manufacturers of toy model trains ever figured out exactly what drives boys and men to want to play with scale model trains, I imagine they could become very wealthy! The ability to create lifelike reproductions of toy model trains just has to have something to do with the natural attraction, the more real a locomotive looks and works, the more attractive it seems.

Heart monitors have come a long way since the days they were created for the infirm to assist with a weak or diseased heart. They were rapidly incorporated into the exercise arena when the fitness craze hit and it wasn't long before professional athletes began utilizing them for serious physical training to fine tune their endurance.Heart monitors started out as basic units with a sensor and transmitter strapped to the chest and a clumsy receiver attached to the wrist bearing a simple watch-like LED screen. Although the basic models still exist, heart monitors have evolved into more functional designs which actually do act as real watches with added features such as adjustable heart rate alarms, backlighting, water resistance, etc.Technology has aided in creating ever more sophisticated heart monitors which contain a myriad of functions that assist in fine tuning strong heart performance. High end models act like a computer and can give you summaries and calculations of data. Some provide info on the highest and lowest heart rate you achieved during an exercise routine. Others offer estimations on the amount of calories you burn during a workout session. Still others can measure your body's oxygen use or store multiple session information so that you can download it to your computer and compare data and progress. No matter which design you choose, there are some basic things to know about correctly working with a heart monitor. In order to effectively use one, you need to first determine your maximum heart rate (MHR) and your resting heart rate (RHR). You want to determine your RHR when you are totally relaxed and without stress. This can be done by taking your own pulse, finger to wrist, or with a monitor.Your MHR can be estimated by calculating a few numbers. If you are a beginner athlete then you can subtract your age from 220 if you're a man and from 226 if you're a woman. If you're a seasoned athlete then subtract half your age from 205. Of course, this is only an estimation and it is advisable to back it up with a monitor bearing treadmill test from a lab or by doing your own test at the local gym. You should work out for several minutes vigorously to make sure you reach your maximum heart rate.Once you learn to incorporate the proper use of a heart monitor into your exercise routine, you will be able to gauge the progress you're making with each passing session. You'll soon learn how hard to push yourself in order to reap maximum benefits. You may also discover that you are slowing down before your MHR is reached which hinders progress. So, whether you like biking, running, swimming, aerobics, or some other heart accelerating sport, correctly utilizing a heart monitor can assist you in building strong endurance levels. Your competitive edge and your heart will greatly benefit.
